All things Twitter
Most things to do with Twitter these days are happening at breakneck speed after Elon Musk bought the service less than a week ago. In the last 48 hours, Elon Musk has, among other things, both become CEO of Twitter and managed to fire the entire Twitter board, which now makes him the only board member of Twitter. Even in the last 24 hours, new things have happened on Twitter and below are some of them.
Musk previously stated that so-called verified accounts on Twitter, that is, the small blue mark that some users have next to their profiles, would become part of Twitter Blue and cost $20 a month. This changed yesterday and the latest bid seems to be that those who want to keep their verified profile badge will be forced to buy Twitter Blue for $8 a month. Today, Twitter Blue costs $5 a month, while applying to become a verified user on Twitter is free.
Furthermore, Elon Musk is said to want to give all Twitter users access to the ability to edit their tweets after they are sent, a feature that is currently only available to paying Twitter users in certain markets.
Another proposal is that users should be able to put videos behind a paywall where Twitter would then take a share of what others pay to watch the videos. Gizmodo writes that it is likely a service that could be used to sell pornographic clips via Twitter, much like OnlyFans does today.
Parallel to all the new initiatives from Musk, Twitter has been hit by an unusually high number of posts that spread racism and other online hate on the platform, which means that some advertisers have already or are considering stopping advertising or pausing their ads on Twitter, writes CNN.
The Verge’s managing editor Nilay Patel wrote a column titled “Welcome to Hell, Elon” after Musk bought Twitter last week. It may be worth reading if you want to get a little insight into the chaos that Musk has now become the owner of.
